Top line-up announced for the 2015 Wexford Spiegeltent Festival

By Jim Hayes

A top-notch programme of events has been announced for the Wexford Spiegeltent Festival in October.

Among the acts appearing on the Spiegeltent stage on Wexford Quayfront this year are Albert Hammond, Bell X1, AL Porter, Steve Earle & the Dukes, The Stunning, Dylan Moran and Jack L.

This year's festival runs for 13 days and nights from Wednesday, October 14 to Monday, October 26, and the eclectic programme of events features contemporary music, comedy, theatre, film, classical music and burlesque.

Since its inaugural year in 2012, the Wexford Spiegeltent Festival has grown to be one of the biggest and most successful multi-genre festivals in Ireland. Set in the beautiful surroundings of the Paradiso Spiegeltent, the Festival has a unique and enticing atmosphere, blending the Olde Worlde feel of the Spiegeltents with the best in popular entertainment.

Festival highlights in previous years have included Bell X1, Alabama 3, Tommy Tiernan, Beautiful South, Mick Flannery, Jason Byrne, Damien Dempsey, Camille O'Sullivan, Tommy Fleming, Jack L, Donovan, Jersey Boys and Paul Brady.

There will be one Spiegeltent on the Quay this year, bigger in size than last year's main venue, with an expanded bar and lobby area.

The Spiegeltents are as rare as they are beautiful, lovingly designed and built by Flemish Master Craftsmen in the early 1920s. Only a handful of these unique and legendary 'halls of mirrors' are left in the world today, each with their own unique personality and style.

These hand-hewn pavilions are constructed of oak with teak baroque dance floors and decorated with velvet and brocade canopies, bevelled mirror columns and stained glass windows. The beautiful circular venues feature intimate booths, ornate bars and Art Nouveau chandeliers.

The Spiegeltents have spent almost 100 years travelling to festivals and fairgrounds throughout Europe, Australia and the Americas, and have played host to the World's great cabaret artists, musicians comedians and burlesque performers.

Since Marlene Dietrich sang 'Falling in Love Again' on the stage in the 1930s, their magic mirrors have reflected thousands of artists, audiences and exotic gatherings.

They are a feature of many international Festivals across the world including the Montreal Comedy Festival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Sydney Arts Festival, Spiegelworld Manhattan, the Udderbelly Festival in South Bank London and of course the Wexford Spiegeltent Festival.

The box office for the 2015 Wexford Spiegeltent Festival opens on Main Street today (Tuesday, August 18) and will be open 6 days a week from then until the end of the Festival.
