Wexford's Ruth Deignan proves she has right stuff

A WEXFORD woman has the right stuff, having won the women's competition in the Hardman Ironman Competition in Killarney, an hour ahead of her nearest competitor.

Competing against much younger competition, Ruth Deignan, a 51-year-old mother-of-three from the Newbay area of Wexford town, finished in a fantastic time of 13 hours and 26 minutes.

The competition consisted of a 3.8 km swim, a 180 km cycle and a full marathon at the end.

Ruth is an active member of Wexford Wheelers and Wexford Masters Openwater Swimming Club.

Her son Paul said the family is extremely proud of her achievement. Ruth works in the medical centre at Sam McCauleys in Wexford.

'She's very fit and is always cycling, running or swimming,' said Denise Underwood, from the swimming club.

Denise said Ruth took part in her first triathlon-style race only a few years ago and since then there has been no stopping her.
