Ben Brosnan marked his 100th appearance for the Wexford Senior footballers in the best possible way in St. Patrick's Park, Enniscorthy, on Wednesday, when he scored all bar two points of the team's tally in their 2-6 to 0-10 Bord na Móna O'Byrne Cup Group 1 victory over D.C.U.
Wexford 2-6 UCD 0-10
The experienced attacker's haul of 2-4 made all the difference, with his first goal coming in the 13th minute after playing a one-two with Paul Curtis.
That gave Wexford a 1-2 to 0-2 lead, and they were ahead by 2-4 to 0-4 at the break after Ryan Nolan picked out Brosnan for his second major midway through the second quarter.
The Bannow-Ballymitty man notched 2-3 in that first-half, with his three points from frees, after Paul Curtis had opened the scoring.
James Stafford and Brosnan (free) left the home side clear by 2-6 to 0-6 after 48 minutes, but they had to endure a nervy finish as they failed to score again, kicking numerous wides in the process.
Although D.C.U. pulled back four points, Wexford held on to set up an intriguing clash next Sunday at the same venue against All-Ireland champions Dublin whose depleted side lost to U.C.D.
Wexford and U.C.D. have three points apiece, with Dublin on two and D.C.U. yet to get off the mark, so the Slaneysiders have a big incentive going into the game with one semi-final spot up for grabs.
