There was nothing but defeats for Wexford teams in the big sporting contests of the weekend, with our Senior hurlers coming up a good deal short in Semple Stadium, Thurles, on Sunday, July 24, when they lost the All-Ireland quarter-final to Waterford by 0-21 to 0-11.

In truth the margin could have been a lot greater, with our neighbours in wasteful form before the break when they hit 13 wides from an overall haul of 18.

The loss of corner-back James Breen through illness was another blow that Wexford simply couldn't take, and the result was in the bag for Waterford long before the final whistle.

It completed a miserable day for the county in the home of hurling as the Minors also departed from the championship race, losing their quarter-final to Limerick by 0-17 to 0-9.

Indeed, all remaining inter-county men's sides are now out, as the Junior footballers went down in the All-Ireland semi-final to Mayo in Tullamore on Saturday by 2-10 to 0-10.

And the win-less weekend had started for Slaneyside teams in Eamonn Deacy Park on Friday when Wexford Youths lost 4-2 to Galway United in their latest SSE Airtricity Premier Division encounter. That result - a sixth straight loss - leaves them second from bottom just above Longford Town by two points.
