Wexford slipped to a narrow loss in their opening fixture in the Peter McNulty Under-21 Football Tournament in Ferns COE on Friday evening.

Kildare 1-10 Wexford 1-7

A youthful home side were level at 0-3 each after a tightly contested first half. Mikie Dwyer opening the scoring while Kilmore's Tom Byrne kicked two points for the Slaneysides.

 

Conor Firman drilled Wexford 1-4 to 0-4 ahead shortly after the break but Sam Doran hit the net for the visitors moments later.

 

Kildare edged away in the final ten minutes with a string of points although substitute Tim Bowler twice went close to netting after his 58th minute introduction.

 

Wexford meet Limerick next weekend with a home game against Clare scheduled for the following week.
