Two first-half goals from energetic corner-forward Fionn Cooney set the foundations for an impressive Glynn-Barntown victory in the Greenstar Under-21 hurling Premier championship first round in Killurin on Tuesday.
Glynn-Barntown 2-12 Shelmaliers 1-8
Cooney raised the green flag in the 12th and 24th minutes to help his side to a 2-7 to 0-6 half-time advantage, and they comfortably kept their opponents at arm's length in the second period.
However, the victory was built on a solid performance from the Glynn-Barntown rearguard, with the Shelmaliers attack time and time again blunted by the home defence.
The hosts began the game with real fire in their bellies and Fionn Cooney slotted over their opening point after just 30 seconds.
Points from Matthew Joyce and Jimmer Doyle for Glynn-Barntown were cancelled out by a brace of Conor Hearne frees before the men in blue and green inflicted the first significant wound on Shelmaliers when Cooney hit the back of the net.
Glynn-Barntown began to pull away from the visitors with points from Ian Moran, Aaron Kehoe (two) and Rowan White, and the Shels' task became even more difficult when Cooney scrambled the ball over the line for his second goal after a Matt Doyle shot had come back off the post.
Conor Hearne was the only scorer for Shelmaliers in the first-half, with all but one of his points coming from placed balls.
After Aaron Kehoe (free) stretched Glynn-Barntown's lead, the Shels really needed something to re-ignite their hopes and that came on 37 minutes when Liam Rockett lived up to his name and blasted the sliothar to the back of the net.
A Conor Hearne free reduced the gap to four (2-8 to 1-7), but that was as close as Shelmaliers got with Glynn-Barntown regaining the initiative with points from Aaron Kehoe (two), Matthew Joyce and Fionn Cooney. The solitary Shelmaliers reply came from Simon Donohoe, and it was only their second point from play.
Glynn-Barntown now face Fethard away in the quarter-final tonight (Tuesday).
