Crossabeg-Ballymurn's giant leap

CROSSABEG-BALLYMURN made the leap from Junior 'A' ranks to Junior in impressive fashion in Killurin on Saturday last, and the fact that near neighbours Blackwater were their first victims made it all the sweeter.

The Over The Water side's 2-10 to 0-7 victory was the stand-out Group A result of the weekend, while two more Wexford District clubs prevailed in the other two contests.

Volunteers saw off Monageer-Boolavogue by 3-9 to 2-8 in Oylegate, while an early scoring burst of 2-2 from full-forward Conor 'Bomber' Byrne in the first ten minutes powered Shelmaliers to a 2-7 to 0-11 victory over HWH-Bunclody in Ballymurn on Sunday evening.

The Group B results went along predicted lines, and keep an eye out for St. Joseph's who started off with a 3-11 to 1-5 victory over the Glynn-Barntown second string in Ballymurn on Sunday. With a new pitch on Whiterock Hill, a new manager in county player David Murphy, and several new players, the black and whites could make a big impression on this championship after losing in the quarter-final last year. Gary Byrne, Declan Goodison and Shane Dempsey were the goalscorers on this occasion.

Tara Rocks, runners-up to Oylegate-Glenbrien last year, had to work hard before overcoming a Shamrocks side who have lost several regulars on transfers to Starlights by 2-8 to 1-7 in Ferns on Sunday last. It was a lot easier for Rathgarogue-Cushinstown who brushed the Castletown seconds aside in Monageer by 2-10 to 0-5.
