A confident second-half performance from Duffry Rovers saw them shake off a game Rathnure side in this entertaining Top Oil Intermediate 'A' hurling championship Group B game in Oylegate on Sunday.
Duffry Rovers 2-18 Rathnure 2-12
With only a goal between the sides at half-time, it was all very much to play for in the second period but Duffry Rovers proved why they were favourites as they pulled clear with some accurate and well-taken scores.
Rathnure were first off the mark through Colin Flynn who exchanged scores with Paul Nolan and Liam Pender, before Trevor Hogan put them in front with a well-taken goal in the tenth minute.
Eamon Doyle swapped scores with Flynn, as did Jason Rackard with Hogan, before the Duffry hit a brief purple patch with ten minutes remaining in the half.
Johnny Flynn-O'Connor took a fine score before Alan O'Neill scrambled home a goal after a tangle with Stephen Watchorn, and Pender added another point to put them a point in front.
Flynn answered with a pointed free, but the Duffry went in three points clear thanks to Rackard and Joe Coleman points just before the break.
The opening ten minutes of the second-half was when Duffry Rovers made the game theirs as they added five unanswered scores with points from Doyle, O'Connor, two from O'Neill and a well-taken goal from Pender which looked to leave Rathnure with too much to do.
They battled on but points from Flynn and John O'Connor were cancelled out by O'Neill and Rackard before they were brilliantly denied a goal by Watchorn.
Rathnure worked hard near the end with points from O'Connor, Flynn, Anthony Westnott and Aodhán Foley and another goal from Hogan.
But the Duffry attack was in fine form and scores from Joe Coleman, O'Neill and Rackard ensured they came home with a well-deserved victory.
