Fethard see off the Island
Winners have more firepower
A depleted Fethard still proved far too good for a disappointing Our Lady's Island in this Top Oil Intermediate 'A' hurling championship quarter-final game played at Taghmon on Sunday afternoon last.
Fethard 3-19 Our Lady's Island 2-11
Fethard had the greater eye for a score and it was this ability which helped them control the game even when playing into the first-half breeze. With the return of some of their injured players expected they will prove a formidable force in the semi-final.
Our Lady's Island will be bitterly disappointed but despite battling right to the end, their game ebbed and flowed without any real pattern, with the result they never looked at any stage like shocking their more highly rated opponents.
Fethard led 0-2 to 0-1 after nine minutes but once Joe Sutton crashed home a twelfth minute goal they upped the tempo of their game and with Mark Wallace clinically pointing frees from a variety of angles, they went on to lead 1-8 to 0-5, but once Brian Power shot a splendid goal three minutes into additional time, they went on to lead 2-8 to 1-6 at the interval, with Dean Moloney pulling a goal back just on the break.
Fethard were keeping their noses in front until Moloney struck for his sides second goal after 37 minutes to reduce the deficit to four points, 2-11 to 2-7, but it was Fethard who regained the initiatve responding with points from Brian Power, Mark Wallace, Chris Molloy, Mikie Dwyer and Chris Colfer, to lead 2-16 to 2-7 after fifty minutes.
Liam Aylward struck over a great long range point for the Island, but there was no disputing the Fethard dominance as they closed out the scoring with a delightful Mikie Dwyer goal, which finished off a hugely impressive performance despite their lack of some key players.
