Padraig Doyle's injury-time point ensured Naomh Eanna booked their place in the quarter-finals of The Courtyard Ferns Intermediate hurling championship with a game to spare in St. Patrick's Park on Thursday.

Naomh Eanna 1-15 HWH-Bunclody 2-11

The Gorey side were trailing by a point in the 58th minute, only for Conor McDonald to level matters from a 45-metre free, and Doyle then broke HWH-Bunclody hearts from Eoin Conroy's feed a minute into added-on time.

The loss will have hurt HWH-Bunclody but they can at least take solace in results going their way elsewhere which means that, like their opposition in Ennscorthy, they will be in the mix in the last eight.

The game started with a bang, with Doyle setting up Conor McDonald in the first minute for a cracking goal.

However, HWH-Bunclody weren't perturbed by the slow beginning and fought back with the next five points from Billy Kelly, J.P. Connors, Aidan Nolan (two) and Kevin Dunne.

Nolan drove his side on in this contest, putting in the type of performance that marked him out as a future county regular when he was Under-21.

A Pádraig Doyle free and a raised white flag from McDonald levelled the scores at 1-2 to 0-5, and it was nip-and-tuck all the way to the half-time interval.

David O'Brien, Doyle (two) and Conor Hughes scored for Gorey while Billy Kelly, Nolan (two) and Barry Kehoe were on target at the other end as the sides went in deadlocked (1-6 to 0-9).

Most of the third quarter belonged to Naomh Eanna as they moved into a 1-9 to 0-10 lead courtesy of points from Pádraig Doyle, Eoin Conroy and the impressive Gearóid Cullen.

However, a penalty, converted by Nolan after Eoin Kelly was fouled, sent HWH-Bunclody into their fifth lead with 15 minutes of normal time remaining.

Gorey stood firm and replied through Hughes and David O'Brien, only for Niall Kelly to pull a loose ball past Barry Kinsella (2-10 to 1-11).

Aodhán Doyle and Eoin Kelly exchanged points but Naomh Eanna finished the stronger and took the points with the last three scores of the evening.
