The Wexford Senior hurlers produced a much-improved performance in Innovate Wexford Park on Sunday, February 21, but unfortunately strong-finishing Clare hit nine of the last ten points scored to claim victory in Division 1B of the Allianz Hurling League by 0-18 to 1-11.
Wexford 1-11 Clare 0-18
The visitors' effective running game into the wind saw them lead by 0-7 to 0-4 after 27 minutes, but Wexford recovered to hit 1-2 without reply before the break and take a 1-6 to 0-7 advantage.
Goalkeeper Mark Fanning had come forward to rattle the net from the penalty spot, but the home side still seemed to have it all to do as they prepared to face the strong wind.
However, they were gritty and determined in the third quarter, reducing the space for the Clare attackers while points from Andrew Shore and three Harry Kehoe frees pushed them into a 1-10 to 0-9 lead by the 50th minute.
The remainder of the game was dominated by Clare though although they didn't hit the front until the 68th minute following a defensive error which led to an easy pointed free for Colin Ryan. Three more unanswered points followed to effectively ensure that Wexford's bid for promotion is over already.
That sole spot will be battled for by Limerick and Clare barring a surprise set of results, while Wexford will now be concentrating on making sure that enough points are secured against Kerry, Laois and Offaly to earn a quarter-final spot.
