Island give themselves fighting chance
Our Lady's Island will go into their final Group A game in the Top Oil Intermediate 'A' hurling championship with a chance to make the quarter-finals after a nine-point victory over Clongeen in Taghmon on Sunday.
Our Lady's Island 1-20 Clongeen 0-14
The Wexford District side had just one point on the board from their three previous games and were in danger of falling into the relegation places had they lost this tie. However, that spot is now owned by Clongeen who will meet one of St. Patrick's, Liam Mellows or Geraldine O'Hanrahans in the drop decider after this loss.
On this form it's hard to believe that the victors hadn't tasted success in this campaign to date. They were sharp from the off, hungry for the win and extremely accurate in their shooting, hitting just a half-dozen wides while pillaging 21 scores.
Not only that, they spread those scores equally throughout the game. Seven points were on the board as the Island led by 0-7 to 0-5 after the first 20 minutes. The pick of the first-half points came a little later when Leigh Aylward nailed a line ball from the right to leave his side 0-10 to 0-8 ahead at the interval.
Clongeen could never get back on terms despite Emmet Kent converting eight frees. Leading by 0-16 to 0-13, Our Lady's Island put the game to bed when Darragh Sinnott forced the ball over the line after Seán Carthy's initial effort was blocked.
Kent saw a late penalty saved by Noel Dempsey after Collie Byrne was felled close to goal, but it wasn't going to be their day anyway as Our Lady's Island deservedly took the points.
