James gets big gig

Having championed his cause in this column before, it's only right that we should extend congratulations to James Owens on his appointment as All-Ireland Senior hurling final referee.

Competent performances in his last two big assignments ensured that the Askamore-Kilrush clubman was in the frame, although Tipperary's loss to Galway was seen as a potential impediment given that Johnny Ryan from the Premier county was his main rival for the role.

Thankfully though the good news filtered through yesterday, and we wish James and his umpires the very best of good luck in Croke Park on September 6.
