Shels surprised in senior tie

Wexford ladies' football has needed a stronger championship and for years we have been hoping that a new team or two might come from the pack and challenge Shelmalier and Clonee.
While it's early days yet, 2015 may be the season when that happens, as Kilmore beat Shelmalier in the opening round of the championship by 3-9 to 1-9 in a game played in Kilmore last week.
Crossabeg-Ballymurn were promoted from the Intermediate ranks last year and made an immediate impact with a 1-9 to 0-7 win over St. Anne's in the opening round. Clonee were the third team in the Senior ranks to grab an opening round win as they saw off Kilanerin in a Gorey District derby.
Clonee held a 1-12 to 2-3 lead at half-time with Liz Evered kicking 1-6 in a very impressive showing. Evered and her sister, Ali, continued to pile on the scores as Clonee really kicked on in the second-half.
Liz notched 1-9 while sister Ali kicked 1-2, with Anne Byrne also very impressive with 1-3 as Clonee went on to record a 3-23 to 2-7 win.
St. James' got their Intermediate championship under way with a very impressive win over local rivals Horeswood on Friday in Mersheen. It was evident from early on that the home side would take the honours. The final score was 4-18 to 1-7 in favour of St. James' as they avenged a loss to the same opposition in the Division 3 league final last year.
Another local derby was played out in Fr. Wheeler Park, Clongeen, on Wednesday and it ended in an exciting draw, with Clongeen and Gusserane sharing the spoils on a 3-3 to 2-6 scoreline.
Clongeen held a 3-1 to 2-2 lead at half-time with crucial goals coming from Chloe Foxe, Leanne O'Grady and Trina Sinnott. Gusserane rallied in a tight second-half and the result was just right on the night in what promises to be a very even championship.
