Kilrush's interest ended by Myshall
Leinster Club IC
Kilrush ended a memorable year with defeat against a quality host Myshall side in the Leinster Intermediate camogie championship on Sunday.
Myshall 4-12 Kilrush 1-3
The double winners have been a breath of fresh air this season with their dangerous attacking play and solid rearguard showings, but they came up against a superior team in the Carlow Senior champions from just across the border.
Myshall have been used to playing big games as Leinster and All-Ireland Junior champions in 2012 and 2013, and that experience and class showed in a powerful performance.
The victors started on the front foot and moved 1-4 to nil ahead after twelve minutes. Ciara Quirke nailed a trio of frees, Tara Wilson pointed while Michelle Nolan grabbed the first goal of her major double.
Mairéad Sheehan, part of a strong centre-field paring for Kilrush, opened her side's account but Ciara Quirke almost immediately replied with a goal from a free.
Katherine Crooks and Ali Ruzchitzko added their names to the list of scorers as the hosts led by 2-6 to 0-1 after 20 minutes.
Fresh from a four-goal salvo in the county final, Margaret Byrne latched onto a Mairéad Lancaster pass to goal for the Wexford side. Despite a late Sharon Sunderland free, Kilrush still trailed by 2-9 to 1-2 at the interval.
Sunderland started the second-half with a '45 and her side's defence competed well, only conceding a Michelle Nolan goal in the first 25 minutes of the period.
As legs tired Myshall tacked on a late 1-3, with Crooks netting to send the Carlow side into the semi-final against Camross of Laois in good form.
There is still plenty to look forward to for the new Wexford Intermediate champions as they now, after a few weeks' break, turn their attentions to preparations for life as a Senior camogie club in 2016.
