Lawlor leads the way for Rathnure
An experienced Rathnure proved too strong for hosts HWH-Bunclody in the Enniscorthy District Under-21 hurling Roinn 1 championship on Monday of last week.
Rathnure 3-22 HWH-Bunclody 2-12
Shane Lawlor was the star performer for the victors, scoring a stunning 2-10, all from play, to see his side into the semi-final against Monageer-Boolavogue.
Rathnure dominated the first-half with Lawlor grabbing his opening major as his side burst into a sizeable lead.
With Eoin Higgins and Michael Redmond putting in sterling performances in the middle third, and the full-back line keeping Bunclody at bay, the visitors continued to excel.
Ciarán O'Connor kept the scoreboard ticking over with frees in the third quarter, while Higgins added his second major as the lead swelled further.
Maybe sensing that the game was up, the foot eased off the gas a little in the final quarter and Rathnure almost allowed Bunclody to edge their way back into the game.
In less than ten minutes the hosts picked off 2-2 to narrow the gap and give the home crowd a little hope heading into the final stages.
However, Rathnure regrouped and re-established their control. In the end they wrapped up a deserved 13-point win to book their spot in the last four.
The next outing for the victorious Rathnure side, against Monageer-Boolavogue, is tenatively scheduled for July 25 in St. Patrick's Park.
