McDonald major gives Fitzgerald's boys the perfect league start
Davy Fitzgerald’s Wexford side opened their Allianz National League Division 1A campaign with a rip-roaring victory over Limerick in Innovate Wexford Park on Sunday afternoon.
Wexford 1-14 Limerick 0-14
Not for the first time, Conor McDonald was the Wexford hero, netting the critical winning goal in the 62nd minute as his side overturned a seven point deficit early in the second half.
Playing against a howling breeze, Wexford started limply, falling 0-7 to 0-2 behind inside fourteen minutes. However, the key to victory was the response, with the hosts restricting the Treaty County to just three further overs in the period.
It took a while after the break for Wexford to use the energy of a home crowd aching for success. Slowly, the Slaneysiders hit their stride, stringing together a run of 1-7 without reply to take command.
Leading by five (1-14 to 0-12), Wexford were able to defend their lead, in part due to a smart piece of goalkeeper by Mark Fanning, fouling David Dempsey when a goal looked certain.
Things don’t get any easier for Davy Fitzgerald’s boys, they travel to Galway next week, hoping to keep their momentum going after an impressive start to the season.
