Minor ladies lose to Laois

Killeshin was the venue for the final Leinster ladies' football Minor championship Group A game between Wexford and Laois on Saturday.

Laois 5-8 Wexford 3-5

The short trip up the N80 had no impact on the Wexford girls as they came flying out of the blocks.

Midfielder Emma Cousins opened the scoring with a fine point off her left side. Centre-forward Sinéad Ryan followed this up with two quickfire goals, one off either foot, as Wexford ran and split open the Laois defence with ease.

The intensity that Wexford started with began to drop off and Laois weren't shy about taking advantage. They dominated the middle third of the game and scored 1-5 without reply to cancel out Wexford's bright start.

Sinéad Ryan responded with her first white flag to leave the sides level (2-2 to 1-5). Laois came back again with 1-2 without reply as Wexford were over-run through the middle.

Half-time couldn't come quick enough for Wexford, as Laois led by five points (2-7 to 2-2).

Again Wexford got the brighter start as half-time substitute Gillian Barry and a Sinéad Ryan pointed free put three between the teams.

Just when Wexford looked to start to dominate the game, Laois came back with a goal that dropped just under the crossbar. This seemed to deflate the Wexford ladies and Laois followed up with their fourth green flag.

Emma Codd, Emily Coakley and Becky Hamilton were introduced to freshen things up for Wexford. Coakley and Hamilton combined, with the latter finishing for Wexford's third goal.

Wexford hit the post twice in quick succession as the two combined again, but the gap was too big to make up. Laois got a fifth goal to really put the game to bed as they ran out convincing winners on a score of 5-8 to 3-5.
