Powerful Dubs deny U-14 crew
Wexford succumbed to a powerful Dublin performance in their second outing in the Leinster ladies' football Under-14 championship at St. Patrick's Park on Saturday.
Dubli 7-18 Wexford 1-6
The Slaneysiders opened their campaign with a solid win against Westmeath three weeks earlier but found a talented Dublin side a much different proposition.
The hosts trailed by 1-5 to nil when Michelle Kinsella tested Dublin goalkeeper Caitlin Staunton with a dipping effort - an exam she passed. All six starting forwards had registered for the visitors when Wexford got their first score from a 27th-minute Kate Foley free following a foul on Sophie Boxwell.
Dublin ended the first-half with a tally of 4-11 but Wexford did pull a goal back in added time when Kinsella's long ball was collected by Boxwell and she was fouled close to goal. Foley coolly converted the spot-kick to give her side something to smile about at the interval.
Wexford were much more competitive in the second-half but it did take them a while to find their feet. A foul on Eadaoin Kent in the 38th minute resulted in Foley popping it over and making it 5-15 to 1-2.
Horeswood starlet Foley registered her third dead-ball four minutes later to make it 6-16 to 1-3 and then clanked the crossbar from 25 metres. As Wexford dominated the last ten minutes, the scores started to flow with more regularity.
Kinsella notched her side's first point from play off the left upright in the 53rd minute before Foley added a free less than 60 seconds later. Foley registered her fifth point, with the aid of the crossbar, shortly after as the hosts ended with a flourish.
Wexford will hope to have a more positive experience on Saturday when they play their third round-robin game at home to Laois.
