One of the great characters of the G.A.A. in Enniscorthy will be remembered in a fitting way in Bellefield on Sunday, May 22, at 2 p.m. when the Rapparees Senior hurlers play their Shamrocks Intermediate counterparts for the Robert 'Tex' Byrne Memorial Cup.
'Tex' gave sterling service to the Rapps on the field and was a member of the last Wexford Minor hurling squad to win the Leinster title in 1985. A great man for a joke and a witty one-liner, he was at his very best in this regard when the banter was focused on the Rapps and the 'Rocks.
Therefore, it's appropriate that the two town rivals will now come together to pay tribute to the life of a true son of Enniscorthy whose untimely passing last year came as a great shock.
An Under-8 challenge match will precede the main event at 1.30 p.m., and the big game will be followed by music and entertainment in the clubhouse.
All proceeds from the game will be donated to the upkeep of St. Mary's Cemetery and the local Meals on Wheels group.
