Shelmaliers clung to victory after a spirited Sarsfields comeback in the Tom Doyle Supplies Senior Football championship at Wexford Park on Sunday afternoon.
Shelmaliers 3-11 Sarsfields 3-8
The over-the-water side looked to be coasting to victory leading 3-11 to 1-6 with just five minutes left but a pair of goals and a point from Lee Chin, coupled with another over from Sean Pailing set up a nervy last few seconds.
Earlier, Shelmaliers had played well into the first half breeze and led going in at the interval courtesy of a Craig McCabe goal (1-5 to 0-6). The in-form forward added another after the interval to further increase the lead.
The Wexford Town side pulled a goal back when Eoin Roche hit the net but the respite was short lived as Shels reeled off four points and a Liam Donnelly goal in succession to increase the advantage to 3-11 to 1-6. It was a lead which proved to be just large enough in the end, despite the late fightback.
