Westmeath shock Wexford
Westmeath delivered two second half goals to go on to a deserved two point victory over a shell-shocked Wexford in this Leinster minor hurling championship quarter-final at Wexford Park on Saturday afternoon.
Westmeath 2-11 Wexford 0-15
It was the double sword attacking duo Killian and Ciaran Doyle who set the lead for the midlanders as they picked off some delightful scores, both from play and frees, in stark contrast to their opponents who shot an alarming total of thirteen wides to their opponents six. Westmeath were the superior hurling side and thoroughly deserved their victory after a poor Wexford performance, with the midlanders recording their first even victory in this grade over the model county.
Ciaran Doyle opened the scoring with a point inside two minutes, going on to build a 0-6 to 0-5 lead by the end of the opening quarter with Ciaran O'Connor pointed frees keeping the homeside in touch, but it was still Westmeath who led 0-8 to 0-7 at the interval.
Westmeath continued to dictate on the resumption with thirty-second and thirty-eighth minute goals from Paddy Doody and Killian Doyle following excellent approach work saw them dismantle the homeside, turning in a superb finish after Wexford had got back level 2-8 to 0-14 with twelve minutes remaining. Joe O'Connor put an easy free wide that would have given his side a crucial leas but it was the midlanders who picked off points through two Killian Doyle and Ciaran Doyle frees to pull off a shock victory.
