Wexford ladies cruise into quarter finals

By Dean Goodison in Kinnegad

Wexford cruised into the All Ireland Ladies Football Intermediate quarter-finals with a dismantling of a poor Antrim side in Kinnegad on Saturday afternoon last.

Wexford 3-19 Antrim 1-3

Shane McCormack's charges needed to add a good performance to a victory after scraping by London in the Leinster Championship, and then the preliminary rounds, and they got it with their best showing of the season to date.

Caitriona Murray top-scored with 1-9, all-but two points of which came from play, while there were other excellent scoring contributions from Niamh Moore (1-3), Maria Byrne (1-2), Ellen O'Brien (0-2), Katie Redmond (0-2) and Emma Hore (0-1).

Wexford led 1-9 to 1-3 at half time courtesy, in no small part, to a superbly taken goal from Murray. Mairead Cooper hit back on the stroke of half-time for Antrim but any hope created by that goal evaporated in a scoreless second period for her side.

Byrne flashed home her teams second goal to make the score 2-11 to 1-3 after forty minutes and Moore rounded out the goal-getting with a powerful finish with twelve minutes remaining.

Next up for Wexford is a last eight clash with Kildare. That match is scheduled for Saturday 22nd August with the venue and time to be announced in due course.
