Fiona in fine form around Dublin streets
Wednesday March 17 2010
FIONA KEHOE (Kilmore A.C.) had an excellent run in the Metro St. Brigid's A.C. St. Patrick's Festival 5k road race on Sunday last.
Staged around the streets of Dublin city centre and based around the Mansion House (the race is organised by former 5,000m World champion Eamonn Coghlan), Fiona clocked a time of 17.42, which saw her finish eighth female overall (seventh Senior lady).
It was a very good performance in a quality field and saw Fiona achieve a P.B. for the distance.
The Leinster Senior road race will be hosted by Bree A.C. in Galbally this coming Sunday, March 21, at 2 p.m. Entries can be made on the day: ¤5 for individuals, ¤15 for a club team and ¤20 for a county team. Enquiries to Carmel Kelly on 0861650971 or Clare Doyle on 087-4151350.
It would be excellent if there was a large turnout from Athletics Wexford, and all club runners are encouraged to field out, as it's not often that a regional championship race such as this is on our doorstep - and especially at such a reasonable price to compete, compared to various other road races in the country.
Best of luck to all the runners from Athletics Wexford who will be taking part in the famous Ballycotton ten miles road race this coming Sunday.
This will be the 33rd running of the East Cork race and each year it draws the cream of club runners from all over Ireland and indeed foreign climes, and there is sure to be plenty of Wexford representation.
On Sunday, March 28, there are two relatively nearby races for Wexford athletes.
Slaney Olympic begins its series of trial runs with a 6.2km race on Little Sliabh Bui at 11 a.m., while the second annual Splashworld 10km road race takes place in Tramore at 12.30 p.m.
The following are the dates for the Leinster and Dublin regional squad training sessions: Saturday, March 20, at the Morton Stadium in Santry, Co. Dublin (registration from 10.30 a.m.); Saturday, April 17, at Tullamore Harriers Stadium in Co. Offaly (registration from 10.30 a.m).
A national middle distance squad session will be held at Tullamore Harriers Stadium this coming Sunday at 11 a.m.
The programme will include a training session, a talk by Maeve Kyle (three times Olympian and one of Ireland's foremost coaches), followed by discussion and advice on race preparation, tapering and competition planning.
Who should attend? Any athlete aged 16 or over with ambition to progress to the top level in the sport at middle distance (800m/1,500m), together with their coaches. A light lunch will be provided.
Registration in advance to Brian Dowling at bdowlingcoach@ hotmail. com (085-2545579) or Jim Davis at coachjdavis@hotmail.c om (087-9537637).
SENIOR RACE
The county Senior road race will be held on Good Friday, April 2, on the Old Dublin Road in Enniscorthy. Hosted by Slaney Olympic, the ladies' 5km race will kick off proceedings at 5.30 p.m., followed by the men's 10km race.
Online entry has opened for the inaugural 10km road race to be staged in Rosslare on Easter Monday, April 5. Organised by Wexford Tri Club, the race will start at 11 a.m. and will involve two laps of the village. There will also be a children's race on the beach.
Juvenile relay teams which have qualified for the indoor nationals are asked to contact Clare Doyle on jamcsdoyle@eircom.net with names, dates of birth and 2010 registration numbers as soon as possible.
The closing date for entries is March 20 for relays.
The first day of this AllIreland fixture is Saturday, March 27, with the second day on Sunday, March 28.
All club affiliations to Leinster (¤25) should be paid to the Co. Treasurer as soon as possible if clubs have not already paid as payment from the county is due before the end of this month.
