The competitive playing season got under way last weekend with both our football teams in action in the All-County Leagues. On Saturday the Juniors hosted Tara Rocks. We were ahead at half-time thanks to a couple of fisted points from Shane Carley and a good goal from Gary Sutton.
A little wayward shooting and some defensive lapses allowed Tara Rocks to draw level with the last kick, however plenty of positives for us.
On Sunday the Senior footballers were too strong for Taghmon and won comfortably. Again many positives here, none more so than Cormac O'Brien's debut in the Senior goal. With little enough to do for 20 minutes his first real test was to face a penalty, and a fantastic double save announced we may have a serious talent emerging in the goalkeeping ranks.
This Friday we kick off our 125th anniversary celebrations with a 24-hour fun run. The fun run last year proved very popular and we hope that all our supporters and friends join in again this time around.
We will run 125 miles in 24 hours from 7 p.m. Friday to 7 p.m. Saturday. To round things off we hope to light up the barbeque and open the bar for our first social gettogether of the year.
The club shop will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday and anyone who wants to see the new fitness centre will be able to go in and have a look around.
The following Friday we will get together in the Riverbank House Hotel for the annual reunion dinner dance. Tickets are ¤30 each and can be obtained from any committee member. We had a fantastic year last year, winning Minor camogie, Under-16 hurling, Minor hurling and football double, Under21 hurling and Intermediate football.
Following that special year and in view of the historic milestone of 125 years in existence, it should be a very special night. We hope to see you there.
