ST. JOHN'S VOLUNTEERS

Round two of the All-County Football League was last weekend.

The double-header for Sunday didn't happen as Davidstown-Courtacuddy asked to play the game on Saturday at 2 p.m. which we agreed to. After a tight-fought game, the Volunteers won by 3-8 to 3-6. Well done lads.

On Sunday the Vols B team played the Starlights. I know the Starlights won well but I don't have a full score before going to press.

Congratulations to a few of our club members - Danny O'Sullivan who won with the N.U.I. Galway hurling team the Fitzgibbon Cup which is a very prestigious award in colleges hurling; Aidan Roche and his family on the new arrival of their baby girl; and Peter Walsh who got married on Saturday.

A reminder that in order to be entitled to the rights of a full member, a person must have their fees paid to the club on a date before March 31. Membership fees are as follows: player, ¤75; student, ¤50; non-player, ¤30; a new membership for parents for all under-age hurling and football is ¤5 per parent and can be paid to Linda Cullen, Frank Turner or 'Chubby'.

Their numbers are on the club website - www.volunteersgaa.com.

The lotto was held in Gaynor's Bar and numbers were 1, 16, 18 and 22. There was no jackpot winner, or match three winner. Next week's jackpot will be ¤5,700. Thank you all for your continued support.

Calling all ladies who wish to play football for the Volunteers - there was a good turnout for the meeting on Tuesday.

First training is on Saturday at 11 a.m. - see you there.

Anyone looking for club merchandise, Jim Turner is our new rep. and can be contacted on 087-2466237.

GLYNN-BARNTOWN

A big thank you to everyone who helped or participated in our second annual fun run on Friday and Saturday last. Our target of running 125 miles in 24 hours was achieved thanks mainly to senior ladies' and men's players who ran through the night and very energetic boys and girls in the evening slots.

Thanks to J.J. who worked the bar in the clubhouse and to both Jims, Flood and Doyle, who worked the barbeque. Sponsorship cards should be returned to team mentors at the next training.

On the field in the ACFL, our first team came back down to earth after a first round win, losing to Fethard, while our second team remained unbeaten with another creditable performance, drawing away to Oylegate.

The Minors set out to defend the football title in good fashion, going to Ferns and recording a good score to grab an early away win.

The camogie parish league got under way on Sunday morning with a couple of cracking games.

Áine Doyle's team lost out to Aoife Barron's in a high-scoring game. In the second game, Liz Wickham's team drew with Mairéad Furlong's team in a thriller.

Both games were not without controversy but provided a great spectacle. The girls' commitment to the league was clear and there was nothing easy out there.

Please come along next Sunday and support them from 11 a.m. in the complex.

The annual reunion takes place this Friday in the Riverbank House Hotel from 8 p.m.

This year we celebrate our 125th anniversary so this reunion will be special.

Among others who deserve a mention on this night are our magnificent sponsors, the Cleary Doyle Group, with John and Mai Doyle such enthusiastic and genuine supporters of our club.

In addition we can look back on a wonderful year last year that saw us capture a Minor camogie championship, an Under-16 hurling championship, an Under-21 hurling championship, the Minor hurling and football double and the Intermediate football championship.

An exceptional year by anyone's standards, we look forward to seeing you there.
