A GREAT day of football was enjoyed in Piercestown recently at the inaugural Model County Under12 tournament finals, organised jointly by the St. Martin's and Naomh Éanna clubs.

This event was introduced to complement the new Go Games format, allowing the participants to field 15-a-side teams as opposed to the new 11-a-side requirement.

Big crowds watched the action on a warm, sunny day, with Craanford thrilled to take the first silverware on offer when they accounted for Taghmon-Camross by 1-6 to 0-3 in the Division 2 decider.

However, the losers made amends as they then met Starlights in the Division 3 decider which was level (3-5 each) at the end of normal time. Taghmon-Camross hit goals galore in extra-time to take the honours by 7-6 to 3-6.

The showpiece Division 1 final was another fine contest, with Naomh Éanna leading St. Martin's by 1-4 to 0-4 at half-time despite playing into a strong breeze. They powered away on the re-start and end the tie as worthy 4-12 to 0-4 winners.

All three cups were presented by St. Martin's club Chairman, James Quirke, and now it's full steam ahead to Sunday, August 29, in Gorey for the hurling finals hosted by Naomh Éanna.

Fixtures: Division 2 final, 10.45 a.m., Craanford v. Faythe Harriers; Division 3 final, 10.45 a.m., Taghmon-Camross v. Rapparees; Division 1 final, 12 noon, Naomh Éanna v. St. Martin's.
