Gaelic Football

Island left with just one chance to survive

Wednesday August 25 2010

VOLUNTEERS WERE comfortable winners of this Junior football championship relegation semi-final which, given the two teams involved, was rather bizarrely held in St. Patrick's Park, Enniscorthy, on Sunday last.

Only the Fixtures committee can explain the logic behind such a ridiculous choice of venue.

However, the St. John's won't mind about that at all after largely controlling proceedings against the Island who will now meet Shelmaliers in a bid to avoid the drop.

The key Volunteers goal arrived in the opening half, and they led by 1-3 to 0-3 at the break.

The Island had more of the ball than their meagre second period tally of one point would suggest, but they were denied the goals they needed by the excellence of Vols netminder Darragh Hayes who pulled off a number of fine saves from Johnny Cheevers, Keith Rooney and Billy Wright.

Our Lady's Island will now meet Shelmaliers, with the losers dropping down to Junior 'C'.
