BALLYMONEY
Despite ideal conditions, a smaller than usual field competed on Saturday in a stableford event. Most players went out early to be finished in time for the big rugby clash between Ireland and Wales. Summer rules were in operation and some slightly lower than expected scores were returned.
Club handicap Secretary Andrew Byrne (19), who was heading to the aforementioned match in Croke Park, cracked out a quickfire round and posted a clubhouse lead of 37 points. Andrew was out in the first group of the day and his score held the lead until the last group in.
Paddy Brown (19) signed for an excellent score of 40 points and thus took first place. The eversteady Joe Lee (11) racked up a creditable 36 points for third spot. This was Paddy's first win and it's good to see a new winner.
The recent fine weather has left the course in superb condition and the decision to end Winter rules proved the correct one.
St. Patrick's Day sees another stableford competition, and a reminder to all members that Sunday next sees the Captain's drive-in. To mark the drive-in, Captain Peter Byrne will donate a prize for the stableford competition winner.
COURTOWN
Over the weekend we had a gents' fourball on both Saturday and Sunday and once again the high scores just keep coming in. We had perfect conditions for this 13-hole competition.
Although the gents turned out on both days, Sunday afternoon surely belonged to the ladies when they played the final of the Azure-sponsored Winter League. Two teams took to the course to battle it out, the Black team led by Laura Funge and the Yellow team led by Claire Duggan.
The Yellow team of Claire Duggan, Kate Sheehan, Eileen Moriarty, Rita Mahony, Frances Sinnott and Breda Nolan were the victors. I heard that one of the girls had a fantastic score of 26 points on her card for the nine holes.
Afterwards in the clubhouse, lady Captain, Marian Siggins, thanked all who had taken part to make the Winter League such a success. She also thanked Frances Swords who had organised the competition and in particular the sponsor, Helen Byrne of Azure Health and Beauty.
Next weekend there will be ladies' and gents' singles on Saturday and then on Sunday the final of the Ulster Bank Winter League. Members are advised to check their text messages and e-mails for their tee-times. We are also advised that the sheets are now out for the Captains' drive-in, which will be played on Saturday, March 27.
This will be limited to 36 teams so get your names in soon if you want to take part. Well done to our Provincial Towns team who had a great start to their season with a good win over The European Club over the weekend.
Results: 1, Donal Noonan (12), Dermot Fitzgerald (19), 34 points (last nine); 2, Joe Kavanagh (19), Paul Molumby (12), 34 points; 3, Neville Steedman (2), Paul Williamson (11), 33 points.
PAULINE'S SOCIETY
Pauline's Golf Society had their latest outing to Seafield Golf Club, Courtown, on March 13, where over 40 players attended President Tommy Power's day.
The course was in excellent condition, with the difficult pin positions providing many talking points.
The greens were also difficult, with many borrows and speeds making it tough to read them. A high standard of scoring was still achieved by the majority of competitors.
Results: overall winner, Brian St. Ledger, 40 points; Category 1 winner, John Shalloe, 38 points; Category 2 winner, T.J. Kielthy, 36 points; Category 3 winner, Nigel Coady, 39 points; nearest pin one, John Shalloe; nearest pin two, Nigel Coady; two-club, Michael Jordan. President Tommy Power thanked those who attended.
The player of the year race is hotting up, and will be decided on the final outing of the year, with the coveted title being contested by up to four competitors.
COOLLATTIN
The first 18-hole competition of the season at Coollattin was staged last weekend. There was a full timesheet on both days, with members making the best of the glorious weather conditions.
The competition was won by Aughrim man Sham Byrne (17) who returned a score of 41 points. He had 21 points on the outward nine, highlighted by back-to-back birdies on the seventh and eighth.
Runner-up with 40 points was Toberpatrick man and former inter-county footballer, J.J. Doyle (11). Shay Clinton (6) won the gross prize with 27 points. Third place went to Rathdrum native Denis Waterton (22) with a score of 40 points.

ST. HELEN'S LADIES
Sunday, March 14: 1, Ruth Kennedy (17), 41 points; 2, Eileen Brosnan (15), 39 points (countback); 3, Susan Evans (33), 39 points.
The first day of our 18-hole competition featured excellent rounds, and both first and second placings were cut shots. Well done ladies.
A warm welcome to one of our new ladies, Susan Evans, who has joined St Helen's recently. Well done on your first 18 holes in St. Helen's, looking forward to seeing your name in the winners' enclosure regularly.

NEW ROSS SENIORS
In all team sports there comes a day when a near-perfect result comes from the team's all-round performance. On Thursday last we saw such happenings where all four players gelled together in excellent fashion.
You can use all sorts of adjectives to describe the fantastic score brought in by the team of Eddie Keher (9), Luke Power (18), Mick Wade (20) and Brian Dolan (28), but even the most glowing of them would scarcely be sufficient to cover their achievement.
In racing parlance it was a runaway success, with their total of 109 points being eleven clear of the runners-up. With two scores counting on holes 1-16 and three registering on 17 and 18, they set their stall well when they turned with 53 points. Adding 56 over the second nine holes, Keher and Co. could not be caught.
In second place with a score that would have won on another day were John Kennedy (15), John Murphy (16), John Harrington (19) and Fr. Jim Byrne (21) with 98 points. Third spot with 96 points went to Paddy Shannon (9), Reiner Opperman (18), Tommy Tyler (18) and Ollie Brennan (23). Nearest the pin prizes were won by Tom Murphy and Denis Kirwan.
This Thursday sees a disruption to our normal weekly outing, with the club open Seniors competition being staged instead. On Thursday, March 25, we welcome our colleagues from Faithlegg Golf Club with the earlier starting time from 10 a.m. onwards.
WEXFORD
Wednesday, March 10, v. par (played over 14 holes): John O'Brien (18) was fizzing with seven up, but two bogeys dropped him back to 5 up, which was enough to win the tournament. David Bradley (Tuskar Rock, 21) came second with three up, which he won on a countback from Derek Casey (16) who also had three up but was a little erratic on the home run.
Friday, March 12: the first of a number of three-person team events (played over 14 holes) was played. In first place with 65 points were Andy Doyle(16), Mick Goggin (11) and Ray Cullinane (12) who had a point to spare over Michael Wadding (14), Michael Swan (16) and Pat Harnett (13). One missed putt was the difference between the teams.
The first 18-hole competition of the season was held on Sunday last. It was a singles stableford event (sponsored by DCS + P Architecrs) and attracted a full entry.
First was Eamonn McGuire (7) with 40 points. Eamonn had four birdies in making his total while Michael Goggin (22) had only one in second place and finished with 39 points.
Third was Paul Harrington (15) on 38 points, emulating his namesake with steady play. The gross winner was Leo Connolly (2) with 35 points, with four birdies helping him to the prize.
Fourth was David Sherlock (16) with 37 points (won on the back nine), and fifth was T.J. Furlong(8) with 37 points. Best veteran was Lar Rossiter (12) with 36 points.
The well-attended prizegiving cermony was a model of brevity with witty, pithy and brief speeches from the Captain, sponsor and winner. With the stretch in the evenings, the course is drying out and playing true.
Fixtures - St. Patrick's Day, March 17, four-person team event (any combination), ¤30 per team. This is a fundraiser for the Junior girls. Music in the bar from 3.30 p.m.
