Wednesday March 17 2010

THE WEXFORD Farmers Co-Op 40 x 20 Intermediate semi-finals were the top drawer bill at local level last week.

David Redmond defeated Damien Kelly from Coolgreany on a 21-2, 21-19 scoreline and the winner, from Templeudigan, will meet another Coolgreany man in the final - his 60 x 30 partner, Darren O'Toole, who defeated Martin Doran 21-16, 21-8, and this promises to be a very entertaining final.

Castlebridge duo Eugene Kelly and Jonny Westlake came through a mammoth game in the Junior doubles before defeating Peter Hughes and Mark Maher. The Over the Water men lost the opening set 21-17, but they won the remaining two 21-20, 21-16 to qualify for the final.

One of the Junior 'D' doubles semifinals was played last week, and Paul Reddy claimed that spot as he beat Paddy Kennedy from Davidstown 21-18, 21-12 to secure a spot in the decider for his club, Ballymitty.

The other finalist is also known as Michael Busher received a walkover from the injured Darwyn Hart from Horeswood.

Jim Berry of Castlebridge won a spot in the final of the Under-21 singles after he came through a tough three-set tie against James O'Toole from Oulart 21-8, 17-21, 21-14.

Davidstown duo Pechelli English and James Freeman secured a final spot in the Over-35 doubles when they beat Billy Rossiter and Sonny Sheil 21-17, 21-7.

Donal Doyle and Frank Maddock earned a final place for St. Martin's when they won a classic against Davidstown duo Mick Armstrong and Pechelli English 6-21, 21-16, 21-20 to show that last year's All-Ireland champions have not lost the winning touch in Masters 'A' doubles.

Kevin Doyle and Dom Stafford were another pair of winners from Davidstown as they earned a final spot in the Masters 'B' doubles after defeating Martin Power and Dessie Heffernan from Coolgreany on a 17-21, 21-10, 21-3 scoreline.

In the final they will meet TomDempsey and Seán Kavanagh from Ballyhogue who defeated Davidstown duo Eamonn Bowe and Jim Ryan last week on a 21-9, 21-7 scoreline.

Ned Buggy of St. Joseph's won his place in the Golden Masters singles final when he completed a nice win over Sonny Sheil from Ballyhogue (21-18, 218).
