Sullivan and Barron master all-comers

Wednesday March 17 2010

THE COUNTY Wexford Novice and Masters road races were held in ideal conditions in Bridgetown on Sunday last, and it was most encouraging to see such a large turn-out for both the ladies' and men's races.

The results of both contests are below, although the category results and Novice results won't be available for a few days, as clarification is needed on athletes' grades.

First off were the ladies, over 3km, and this saw a head-to-head between Ann Sullivan (D.M.P.) and Jackie Carty (Kilmore). The pair had finished second and third respectively on their last meeting in the county Senior cross-country race in December and it was again Ann who had the upper hand.

Ladies' race: 1, Ann Sullivan (D.M.P.), 10.48; 2, Jackie Carty (Kilmore), 10.56; 3, Martina Conran (Slaney Olympic), 12.38; 4, Yvette Shovlin (St. Killian's), 12.43; 5, Mary Doyle (Slaney Olympic), 13.10; 6, Marie Walsh (Adamstown), 13.25; 7, Catherine Doolan (St. Killian's), 13.31; 8, Catherine O'Connor (Menapians), 13.35; 9, Niamh O'Brien (Menapians), 13.40; 10, Dawn Whelan (Slaney Olympic), 13.46; 11, Deirdre O'Grady (St. Killian's), 13.47; 12, Mary Moriarty (St. Killian's), 14.09; 13, Fran Barden (Kilmore), 14.18; 14, Deirdre Kennedy (Kilmore), 14.41; 15, Orla O'Connor (Menapians), 14.44; 16, Bridget Barron (Slaney Olympic), 14.49; 17, Deirdre Kavanagh (Slaney Olympic), 15.00; 18, Linda Busher (Menapians), 15.11; 19, Jane Porter (Slaney Olympic), 15.19; 20, Elaine McMahon (Menapians), 15.22; 21, Siobhán Doyle (Menapians), 15.24; 22, Barbara Shortle (Menapians), 15.59; 23, Christine Doyle (S.B.R.), 16.25; 24, Helen Sinnott (Menapians), 16.44; 25, Emma Farrell (Slaney Olympic), 16.47; 26, Kate Wilson (Menapians), 16.52.

The men's race was held over two laps of the 3km circuit covered by the ladies, and Kevin Murphy (Slaney Olympic) set out to make it a good test.

However, last year's winner, David Barron (also S.O.), was in close attendance throughout and he kicked on in the final two kilometres to open a decisive gap and thus repeat the 2009 win from Enniscorthy.

Men's race: 1, David Barron (Slaney Olympic), 19.02; 2, Kevin Murphy (Slaney Olympic), 19.13; 3, Lahcen Aouissar (S.B.R.), 19.44; 4, Jim Stafford (Slaney Olympic), 20.00; 5, Willie Rossiter (S.B.R.), 20.21; 6, Ger Moloney (St. Paul's), 20.29; 7, Tommy McElwaine (S.B.R.), 20.46; 8, Mick Jordan (Slaney Olympic), 20.52; 9, Brian Murphy (Slaney Olympic), 21.08; 10, Martin Monaghan (Slaney Olympic), 21.11; 11, John Roban (Slaney Olympic), 21.49; 12, Seán Murphy (United Striders), 22.02; 13, Richard Fortune (D.M.P.), 22.03; 14, Eugene Doherty (S.B.R.), 22.24; 15, Denis Moynihan (S.B.R.), 22.35; 16, Aidan Doyle (S.B.R.), 22.38; 17, Michael Flaherty, 22.48; 18, Pat Hyland (Slaney Olympic), 22.51; 19, Mick Morrissey (Slaney Olympic), 22.55; 20, Maurice Whitty (Slaney Olympic), 23.01; 21, Eugene Reck (D.M.P.), 23.06; 22, Malo Roban (Slaney Olympic), 23.10; 23, Mick Nolan (Slaney Olympic), 23.18; 24, David Leonard (S.B.R.), 23.22; 25, Pat Sullivan (Slaney Olympic), 23.22; 26, Emmett Malone (United Striders), 23.53; 27, David Kirwan (United Striders), 23.54; 28, Brendan Kirwan (United Striders), 24.01; 29, Frederic Bourdin (Menapians), 24.11; 30, Edward White (Slaney Olympic), 24.17; 31, Patrick O'Leary (United Striders), 24.17; 32, Brendan Dillon (Slaney Olympic), 24.20; 33, Leo Harte (St. Paul's), 24.31; 34, Pat Kirwan (S.B.R.), 24.47; 35, Adrian Stafford (Kilmore), 24.50; 36, Paul Fallon (Kilmore), 24.57; 37, Kevin Burke (Kilmore), 25.16; 38, Paul Murphy (Slaney Olympic), 25.45; 39, Kieran Bates (Menapians), 26.12; 40, Paul Holmes (S.B.R.), 26.25; 41, Owen O'Neill (St. Paul's), 27.04; 42, Steven Whelan (Kilmore), 28.02; 43, Peter Connick (St. Paul's), 28.06; 44, Lar Doyle (Slaney Olympic), 28.18; 45, Paul Foley (Kilmore), 29.32; 46, Graham Porter (Slaney Olympic), 29.52; 47, Terry O'Keeffe (Slaney Olympic), 30.00; 48, Billy Harpur (S.B.R.), 30.03; 49, Mick Byrne (Menapians), 33.04.
