THE STEP-UP from 'B' to 'A' proved too much for Wexford as they went down to a big defeat to Dublin in the first round of the AllIreland Under-16 camogie championship in Monamolin on Saturday last.

All is not lost for last year's 'B' winners, although it won't get any easier with games to come against Kilkenny and Galway.

Wexford played against the strong breeze in the first-half and began well with a few early attacks, but these were dealt with capably by the Dublin defence. The visitors began to get into their stride, with Ali Twomey and Ciara Berkeley causing problems for Wexford with their lightning speed and neat stickwork.

Dublin had 1-5 on the scoreboard before Alison Murphy got Wexford off the mark on a rare attack in the 19th minute.

They went on to trail by 2-6 to 02 at half-time, with the second point coming from Emma Walsh after a Shauna Sinnott free was won initially by Marie-Claire Morrissey.

Wexford hoped that the breeze would give them assistance, but if anything it died down for the second-half.

Dublin added two points before Louise Sinnott replied from a free, and she also scored the last point from a '45 in the 59th minute.

In between Dublin added four points, with Ciara Berkeley continuing to run the show.

Shauna Sinnott at centre-back was excellent for Wexford, with Louise Sinnott also good and Emma Walsh on occasion.

Hayley Cahill and Brídiín Redmond worked very hard in defence.
