Good performance by Wexford rowers in 'Celtic Challenge'
Wexford's rowing team won third place in the mixed category for sculling its way from Arklow to Aberystwyth in Wales in the 2014 Celtic Challenge.
The Wexford team raised over €1,000 for the RNLI and 'Its Good To Talk' services. Nine of the 12 team members are members of the Ferrycarrig Rowing Club, while two come from the St. Kearns Rowing Club in Saltmills, and one from Killurin Rowing Club. Team members were Orla Curtis, Gillian Roche, Dee Moran, Sharon McGuinness, Sarah Howlin, Lorraine Foley, Christopher Corley, Richie Roche, Kevin Fitzharris, Mark Laynejoynt, William Curtis.
Treasurer of the Ferrycarrig Rowing Club, Louise Power, said the team had been training for the event since October last year, and like all the other entrants, got into action early this year as the race ended up starting at 3 p.m. on the Friday of the May Bank Holiday weekend instead of the scheduled Saturday, on account of a bad weather forecast for the Sunday and Monday.
The team arrived in Wales at midday on Saturday, having rowed through some rough weather during the night. Louise jokingly suggested they could have got there even quicker.
'Cox Kevin Fitzharris managed to doze off during the night, so they could have done a few circles in the middle of the sea, we just don't know!' she laughed.
