GOREY UNDER-17s took on Tullamore in this must-win game in the Leinster League on Saturday last.

Gorey needed to bounce back from a narrow defeat and a draw with a chance to get into the Premier play-offs. Gorey kicked off the match and with the ball not going ten metres, Tullamore had a scrum on the half-way.

The Gorey pack, who have worked hard on their scrums, quickly put Tullamore under pressure and took it against the head with the Gorey captain, Paul Boyle, making a break up the field and putting his team in the Tullamore '22.

Gorey put pressure on the Tullamore defence, resulting in a scrum in which a pick and go brought the first score from Paul Boyle. Gorey took control of the match with the powerful running of Achialle Kinsella backed up by Adam Masterson which enabled them to be on the front foot.

Gorey again had a scrum on the Tullamore '22 and with a planned move the impressive Stanley Hadden went over the whitewash for the second try which Cian Hadden converted from a tight angle.

Tullamore came down to Gorey with a big reputation and put some good phases of play together, and but for some vital last-ditch tackles from full-back Jack Willoughby it could have been a different story.

The game ebbed and flowed with Gorey scoring after another line-out steal from Ross Doyle earned possession, with Stanley Hadden going over for his second. Tullamore came back with a fine try but Gorey went into the half-time break 19-7 ahead.

Tullamore came out in the second-half with all guns blazing and scored to leave the game in the balance at 19-14. A rallying call from the Gorey captain had the desired effect with the speedy winger Sam Kennedy making good ground.

Gorey's off-load game came into play with Jack O'Hagen, Dan Keogh and Bella combining to set up the hard running of hooker Achialle Kinsella. Gorey made seven changes in all and scored through some good work from Daniel Sawyer and Barry Doyle, with the captain going over to finish the game Gorey 33, Tullamore 14.

Gorey's next game is at home against Mullingar on Saturday, January 11, with all support welcome.
