Adamstown take derby

Wednesday September 01 2010

ADAMSTOWN ARE assured of a place in the Junior hurling championship semi-finals as a result of a hard-earned four-point win over Taghmon-Camross at sun-drenched O'Kennedy Park, New Ross, on Sunday last.

Wind-assisted Taghmon-Camross were the slightly superior team throughout the opening half, with Barry O'Gorman in fine scoring form and Richard Comerford and Denis Banville also on target. And with David Bridges showing good accuracy from frees, they led by 0-6 to 0-2 after 20 minutes and by 0-7 to 0-5 at the break.

Willie Colfer led the Adamstown charge with a brace of early points, while Lorcan French and James Breen also found the range before the interval.

Patrick Whitty and M.J. Cooper brought the sides level three minutes into the second-half, but Barry O'Gorman continued with his fine accuracy for Taghmon-Camross before Alan Nolan from a well-struck line ball put them two points clear again, only for Adamstown to start showing their superiority.

Thomas Furlong and Michael Curtis levelled the scores on 0-9 each, and county Minor Shane O'Gorman with two brilliant points and Patrick Whitty from frees opened up a four-point lead before Barry O'Gorman replied.

The only goal came nine minutes from the end when Willie Colfer sent in a long ball from midfield over the heads of the advancing defenders to the unmarked Thomas Furlong, and he gave Seán O'Gorman little chance as he picked his spot to open up a seven-point advantage (1-14 to 0-10) with nine minutes to go.

The only remaining score was the Taghmon-Camross goal. Paul Cooper between the Adamstown posts did well to stop Barry O'Gorman's initial effort, but Richard Comerford rushed in to dispossess and tapped the ball from close range to the net, but by that stage Adamstown were already well on their way past last year's beaten finalists.
