Champs to take on Ferns

Martin's will meet Alley

Wednesday September 01 2010

OUTSIDERS Ferns St. Aidan's drew the short straw at Monday night's Pettitt's Senior hurling championship semi-final draw when they were pitted against an Oulart-The Ballagh team which looked invincible in their weekend demolition of Faythe Harriers. The game will go ahead in Wexford Park on Sunday, September 26, as part of a double bill along with the meeting of St. Martin's and Buffers Alley which will be harder to call. However, the saints will start as favourites based on their impressive victory over Rathnure, whereas the Alley only hit their best form in patches as they overcame Rapparees after extra-time.

While Ferns St. Aidan's will be contesting a semi-final for the first time in ten years, they will take heart from a couple of significant victories over Oulart-The Ballagh at Under-21 level in 2005 and 2007.

Turning to relegation, the must-win games will pit Shelmaliers against Marshalstown-Castledockrell and Blackwater against Rathgarogue-Cushinstown, meaning that a final do-or-die tie between the next-door neighbours from Wexford District is a distinct possibility. The two losers of the above ties will drop down to Intermediate, while the winners must meet then with only team ultimately destined to stay up.

The stand-out clash in the FBD Intermediate hurling championship quarter-finals will take place in Farmleigh on Saturday, September 11, when HWH-Bunclody face their closest rivals, Duffry Rovers, who were demoted from Senior ranks at the end of last season.

The full draw won't be determined until Group B is concluded, although Shamrocks and Geraldine O'Hanrahans look in pole position to advance.
