Mary's dream ends

Áine O'Brien of St. Mary's takes on Presentation's Rachel Phelan in the Leinster final.

ST. MARY'S Secondary School (New Ross) played the Leinster Junior 'B' camogie final on Saturday week last. Pitch availability was a major problem and, after numerous attempts at finding a suitable venue, it was finally played in the Black and Whites home ground in Skeoughvosteen.

Presentation Secondary School (Kilkenny) proved to be very strong opposition. They put pressure on St. Mary's from the throw-in.

The sliothar was in the New Ross square for ten minutes, resulting in two '45s. Aoife Scully in goal was excellent and made some fine saves.

In the eighth minute, Presentation managed to score a goal followed by a point a minute later. St. Mary's rallied and got their only score of the first-half in the eleventh minute - a point by midfielder Patrice Lawler.

Play was fairly evenly-balanced for the remainder of the half, with Pres. looking that bit stronger. The half finished, after another goal for the Kilkenny side, with Pres. leading by 2-1 to 0-1.

St. Mary's started the second-half strongly with the hill in their favour, and Patrice Lawler scored a goal after five minutes. This encouraged the New Ross girls and they upped their game, but scores were not resulting.

Presentation scored five points in nine minutes to widen the gap. Marguerite Hoynes got St. Mary's second goal in the 25th minute, but that was not enough to bridge the gap and the Kilkenny side emerged as Leinster champions on a final score of Presentation 2-7, St. Mary's 2-1.

This was a good performance from the young team. All the panel, except one, will be eligible to play at this level again next year. Well done girls. Thanks to Leann Murphy and Mr. McDonald for their work in preparing the girls since September.
