New boss happy with his charges
CAMOGIE SUPREMO J.J. Doyle was understandably thrilled to see his side qualify for the league semi-finals following their eight-point victory over Galway in Enniscorthy on Saturday, and was particularly happy with how the game plan was executed.
'It's performance we are looking at, we believe if we get the performance we have the players to put the scores over and it's great to see so many getting scores, that's the big thing.
'An eight-point victory against Galway at any time of the year is good, it builds confidence, so hopefully it will keep going that way.
'We are telling them, "listen, aimless balls are no good, we need balls in low in front of our forwards". That's the big thing, balls out of the backs have to be wing balls, by pucking them up the middle you're only pucking them to the opposition, so that's what we are working on.
'We are working in training, working on it all the time with them. Thankfully they are putting it in, and the more they do it hopefully it will become second nature to them.'
Doyle was exceptionally pleased with the backs, despite the early wobble. 'We were caught cold, on the hop, for the first one. There is a good breeze in there and we got caught a bit.
'The thing about it is, what did they get, five, six points? To hold the Galway forward line to that kind of score is credit to the back line. They are just putting in a huge effort and they never say die.'
A win next week against Clare guarantees top spot in the group and a semifinal against the winner of the Cork v. Tipperary match, and J.J. expects a victory. 'You would expect it (to win comfortably) but a match is a match, we will be making more changes for next week and giving other people a go. You can train all you like but you can't beat matches.'
