Oulart-the Ballagh blitz Loughhiel on their own patch

Wednesday February 08 2012

URSULA JACOB blasted 1-16 as Oulart-the Ballagh blitzed into their first All-ireland Senior club camogie championship final with victory over Loughgiel in Casement Park, Belfast, on Sunday last.

The Wexford champions went into the tie as warm favourites but it proved to be a complete mismatch as the Enniscorthy District club strolled past their northern opponents.

Simply put, it was Oulart's easiest game in this campaign as they racked up scores at will with Jacob the main protagonist.

Despite the ease of scoring, to chalk up 1-16 was a remarkable feat for the Wexford star, yet it could have been more as the Loughgiel stopper, Ciara Johnson, made several vital saves to prevent the forward grabbing a second major.

For their part, the home side lost far too many individual battles to keep the game close. Arguably only tidy corner-back Áine Connolly came out on top in the one-on-ones and that simply wasn't enough as they got steamrollered by the red and black tide.

The type of game it would turn into was all-too evident inside five minutes. The visitors forwards headed at goal like a bee to nectar and scored four points inside five minutes. Indeed, had it not been for a fine Connolly stop from Louise Sinnott, the Ulster champions could have conceded an early goal too.

Jacob registered her sixth point by the end of the opening quarter - with Sharon Kehoe adding the other Oulart point - as the visitors went 0-7 to nil ahead.

Struggling to break down a defensive line that rarely falters, Loughgiel saw Sinnott get herself on the scoresheet too and the bend-but-not-break philosophy that their full-back line had lived by for the opening 22 minutes was soon dispelled too.

It was Jacob, who else, who finally bludgeoned an effort past Johnson, who might have done better to stop the powerful effort. Moments later Una Leacy got herself in on the act also.

It was a majestic strike too by the now full-forward as she clutched a Diane Ryan sideline out of the air and pummelled a shot to the bottom corner that Johnson needn't have bothered moving towards.

The first-half massacre still had two further moments of note as Aideen Brennan knocked over her first point and Jacob added her eighth to leave the Leinster champions ahead by 17 at the interval (2-11 to nil).

There was simply no way back for Loughgiel as they came out for the second-half, but the Antrim side were gifted a consolation goal when Racquel Mccarry's long-range effort flew over Ciara Storey and bounced past Helena Jacob to the net in the opening minute of the second-half.

If the home side had any hopes of winning, no matter how unrealistic thay may have been, after the goal, they didn't last long. This time it was youngster Aideen Brennan latching onto a loose ball and pulling to the net for her side's third goal.

Sharon Kehoe, Brennan, Leacy and Jacob (two) all got the overworked white flag umpire involved again before a mid-half lull saw Loughgiel outscore Oulart by 0-2 to 0-1 - with two Emma Mcmullen points - in the next five minutes.

However, the visitors finished strong with five Jacob points rounding off the scoring, the last of which came after her goalbound shot was saved on the line.

The emphatic victory wraps up a first All-ireland final spot, for either gender, for Oulart. They may not have been tested since the Wexford county final in October but that is sure to change in Croke Park on March 4. There they will face the winners of the postponed tie between Drom-inch from Tipperary and Killimor of Galway - the latter being the side that knocked the Wexford club out at the semi-final stage last year and went on to take the title.

The fact that the pitch in Nenagh was unplayable on Sunday last will be a blessing in disguise for the Oulart-the Ballagh mentors as, rather than relying on DVDS, they will now get an opportunity to watch their opponents-to-be in the flesh when that game is rearranged.
