Monageer-Boolavogue enjoy clearcut success
GOALS IN the first and last ten minutes gave Monageer-Boolavogue a relatively straightforward victory over Our Lady's Island in the Top Oil Intermediate 'A' hurling championship Group B in Killurin on Sunday last.
The Island are still getting used to life at this level and while they gave a decent account of themselves against one of the title contenders at this grade, they never threatened an upset.
That was partly because of a slow start, despite playing with the elements in the first-half. The excellent Niall O'Loughlin already had his opening point on the board when John Ivory's run down the left and pass picked out the Monageer full-forward. O'Loughlin didn't hold back and rifled to the roof of the net.
The Wexford District side chipped away at the lead and points from the two midfielders, Colm and Liam Kinsella, as well as a double from John Walsh, left them within one after 22 minutes (1-2 to 0-4).
Yet O'Loughlin was the thorn that Our Lady's Island couldn't pull out and he added three further points to give his side a nice lead at the change-around (1-5 to 0-4).
Walsh got the first score of the first half for the underdogs but points from James Gahan and Brian O'Loughlin immediately eased the Enniscorthy District men ahead again.
Another brace of dead balls from Walsh gave the Island some hope seven minutes into the second-half (1-7 to 0-7), but they would only manage one further point as their opponents eased clear.
Again it was O'Loughlin doing all the damage. The dangerous forward added four more points and capped a fine display with his second goal after a lovely ball by Damien Fenlon picked him out. Monageer-Boolavogue now sit level on points with Ballyfad at the top of the group and are primed for a quarter-final place.
