Depleted Wanderers end league with away loss

Last Sunday a seriously depleted Wexford Wanderers Senior men's XV travelled to face Birr in the final round of the Leinster League.
Birr 31 Wanderers 7
Wanderers, who have being plying their trade in Division 2B this season, have had mixed fortunes with results away from Park Lane being a challenge. The game in Birr was no different, with Wanderers on the back foot after 20 minutes when the home side took the lead with an unconverted try.
Ten minutes later and down to 14 players due to injury, Wanderers' back row Shea Boggan set veteran James O'Connor up for a try which was converted to give them a narrow lead.
However, just on the stroke of half-time Birr added a second unconverted try to lead 10-7 at the interval.
In the second period the pace of the game again started to tell on the depleted Wanderers players who, with a bare starting 15, were feeling the pace.
Birr extended their lead with a converted try before adding another two converted tries to put the contest beyond them at 31-7 which was the final score.
Worrying for Wanderers was the growing injury list, with Nick Jones having to be removed to hospital as a precaution due to a neck injury, and young Luke Roche being patched up on a number of occasions.
For Wexford the result was almost academic as their position in mid-table was relatively secure in advance.
However, failure to field would have resulted in possible points deduction which could have propelled Wanderers into the relegation play-off zone.
The league campaign ends with Wanderers in fourth place overall in a season which champions Roscrea dominated from start to finish.
Next up for Wanderers will be the small matter of a Towns Plate clash away to Tullamore, further details of which will be outlined in the coming weeks.
In other news, Wanderers' annual gala awards dinner has been scheduled for Saturday, April 9.
Please keep an eye out for further details which will be announced shortly regarding ticketing arrangements.
