Doran's Bridge defeat Monart to lay claim to Paddy Owens Cup
THE PADDY Owens Memorial tournament was held in Enniscorthy on Friday last.
Division 1: Doran's Bridge 'A' beat Woodsmen in two straight games, 2110, 21-10 respectively.
Division 2: Monart beat Doran's Bridge 'B' in two straight games, 21-11, 21-9 respectively.
Overall final: Monart received seven aces up in each game - Noel and William Redmond (Doran's Bridge 'A') beat Eddie Larkin and Dennis Larkin Snr. (Monart), 21-11. Harry Kinch and Richard Collier (Doran's Bridge 'A') beat Arty Roberts and 'Boxer' Mahon (Monart), 21-20. Billy McGuire and Dennis Fitzgerald (Doran's Bridge 'A') beat Dennis Larkin Jnr. and Billy Larkin (Monart), 21-9.
Congratulations to Doran's Bridge who were outstanding and received the Paddy Owens Cup and trophies for winning. The runners-up also received trophies.
The winners' trophies were sponsored by Ned Murphy Tractors, Ballydaw, Marshalstown, while the runners-up trophies were sponsored by B&M Upholsteries, Fr. Murphy Park, Enniscorthy.
The league concluded on Thursday night last, and the final tables were -
Division 1: Doran's Bridge 'A', 23 points; Woodsmen, 18 points; The Forge, 11 points.
Division 2: The Gap, 23 points; Killenagh, 17 points; Monart, 17 points; Doran's Bridge B, 10 points.
In the Divison 1 final, old rivals Woodsmen and The Bridge will clash again, while Division 2 is yet to be settled. The Gap will play either Killenagh or Monart in the final. These two (Monart and Killenagh) will have to play-off for the right to be in the final. The play-off will be held in Ferns on Thursday at 6.30 p.m
The county championship will take place alongside the above mentioned play-off on Thursday at 7.15 p.m.
The All-Ireland singles and ringers will take place on Saturday, September 11, in Athy, Co. Kildare.
We'd like to offer our sympathies to the Kehoe family on the death of Peter Kehoe who was a noted player for many years with the Borrmount horseshoe team.
