Eight from Wexford in Athy action

THE GOULEYDUFF doubles was held in Athy on Saturday last. The turn-out, however, was disappointing - only 14 players took part with eight from Wexford.

Semi-finals: Paddy Byrne and Denis Ryan (Gouleyduff) beat John Joe Byrne and John Giltrap (Woodsmen), 21-10; Chris Mcdonald and Paddy Connors (Woodsmen) beat Denis Larkin Snr. and Denis Larkin Jnr. (Monart), 21-2.

Final: Paddy Byrne and Denis Ryan beat Chris Mcdonald and Paddy Connors, 21-9.

Byrne in particular starred on the night, throwing outstanding shoes, and the team of Ryan and Byrne well deserved their victory.

On Saturday, April 28, the Ballycoolan doubles will be held in Athy with a 6 p.m. start (own partner).

The first Wexford tournament is the Thomas Doyle Memorial which will be held in Páirc Mhuire, Ferns. This will be an open doubles tournament on Sunday, May 6, with a 2.30 p.m. start.

The Wexford County Board will hold a meeting on Wednesday, April 25, in Ferns Hall. Any teams that have not paid their registration must attend, or alternatively send the registration/insurance fee and a list of names to the meeting.

This will result in them being eligible for all tournaments in Wexford and the midlands (excluding the Wexford League).

The fee is €65 per club for insurance plus €10 per team member for registration to the H.P.A.I.

Any club without the full complement of players (six) may pay the fee and their members will be eligible to play in all singles and doubles tournaments (although the full insurance fee applies).

Any new clubs who are thinking of participating are welcomed to the fold.
