Enniscorthy 10k set for another big entry

Tuesday February 07 2012

THE ANNUAL Enniscorthy 10K road race takes place this coming Sunday at 12 noon and is being sponsored by Creane & Creane Insurance.

This is the seventh year of the race which is run annually by Slaney Olympic A.C. as a fundraiser for the club. It is open to both runners and walkers. The race has grown in popularity and last year had an entry of over 600 between runners and walkers.

There is a generous prize fund with a first prize of €150 for the first male and the first female home. Added to that, there is an event record bonus of €250 on offer if the winners (male and female) break the course records.

Audi Enniscorthy on the Old Dublin Road is sponsoring the bonus prizes. The men's record stands at 29.35 and the women's record is 34.40. There are also prizes for second to fifth in the open category as well as for the winners in veteran and Junior categories. Team prizes (teams of four) will be awarded to the winning men's and ladies' teams. There will be spot prizes throughout the field.

Race headquarters is at the Shamrocks G.A.A. club in Clonhaston where runners can pick up their numbers and timing chips. There will also be changing facilities. Postrace refreshments and prizegiving will be in St. Senan's school adjoining the G.A.A. club. Further details and pre-entry at €15 are available at www.slaneyolympic.com or at www.runireland.com. Pre-entry will close on Friday. For further information phone Jane Porter on 0876799490. There will be limited entry on the day at €20.

Meanwhile, athlete Kate O'neill (left) joined Irish track legend and race director, Senator Eamonn Coghlan, to launch the St. Patrick's Festival 5k family fun run which takes place in Dublin on Sunday, March 18. Kate has roots in Wexford as her father, Vincent O'neill, a keen G.A.A. fan and great supporter of the county's hurling achievements, is from Coolgreany. A member of the organising club, Metro St. Brigid's A.C., Kate is calling on all Wexford runners to participate in the event, proceeds from which will go to our Our Lady's Children's Hospital, Crumlin.

The St. Patrick's Festival 5k event is open to fun runners of all ages and will be staged as an integral part of the St. Patrick's week festival programme.

Timed to allow participants to travel from Wexford and other parts of Ireland and home again on the same day, it begins at 12 noon from the Mansion House following a route through Georgian Dublin before returning again to the finish line in Dawson Street.

Registration can be made online at www.patricksrun.com
