NEW ROSS SENIORS
The going was tough on Thursday with a stiff southerly breeze blowing against the players on most of the 18 holes. The greens, back to their brilliant best, found out a lot of players with missed putts scampering past the hole, and ended up down below. Sometimes the distance back was further than where the original putt was taken.
Nevertheless, it was the same for all 15 teams and it took a countback to separate three of them who finished deadlocked on 87 points each. By virtue of a better back nine (46/44), Denis Kirwan (11), Andy Ronan (14), Liam Glasheen (19) and George Peters (23) were declared the winners.
In second place again after a countback over the back nine (44/41), Luke Power (18), Robert O'Dwyer (20), Jamesie Wallace (21) and Les Jastrebski (24) took the runners-up spot. Another 87 points compiled by Danny O'Leary (9), Richie Aylward (17), Shane Masterson (18) and Larry Shannon (19) gave them the third prize.
No tapes were returned so no nearest the pin prizes were awarded. This Thursday is open week with a three-person team event scheduled for that day, and booking for same is online.
We will, however, take the final names and entry fee for our Dungarvan outing (Monday, June 22) and teams and tee-times will be available on Thursday, June 18, which is open singles day.
Good weather heralded the start of open week in New Ross, which started last Friday with a four-person open scramble sponsored by The Shelmaliers Golf Society.
The team of Larry Doyle (20, Wexford), Mick Rossiter (17, Ballymoney), Gary Walsh (17, Ballymoney) and Liam Fleming (19, Enniscorthy) took home first prize with a great score of 57.7. Darren Tutty (8), Liam Dowling (11), Paul Mullane (6) and Anthony Fitzpatrick (14) finished in second with 58.1.
Ronan Whelan (3), Aidan O'Neill (7), Dylan Farrell (5) and Brandon Gardiner (13) finished in third with 58.2. Thank you to the Shelmaliers Golf Society for their continued and generous support.
Saturday's competition was an 18-hole betterball fourball sponsored by Frisby Kitchens. Although it was sunny and dry, a testing breeze meant that the scoring was kept in check.
Once again visitors were to the fore with Damien Somers (14, Ballymoney) and Tom Shiggins (14, Enniscorthy) taking home first prize with 41 points, and Tony O'Driscoll (19) and Ollie O'Connor (19) finishing in second with 40 points.
The only home pair to get amongst the prizes were Pat Phelan (13) and Eamon Jones (18) who took third place with 39 points. Thank you to Tommy Frisby of Frisby Kitchens for their continued and generous support.
Open week continues this week with a three-person scramble sponsored by Business Supporting Golf on Thursday (June 11), an 18-hole singles stableford sponsored by EMC Autos on Friday (June 12), an 18-hole betterball fourball on Saturday (June 13) sponsored by Creane & Creane Insurances, and an 18-hole singles stableford sponsored by James Kent Alushield on Sunday (June 14). Tee-times can be booked online for all competitions.
Last week's competition sponsored by Peter Waters Videography went to Ger Martin (16) and John (KK) Hartley (16) with 24 points, just ahead on the countback of Harry Reinhardt (16) and Seamus Aldridge (12) who took the category prize.
The other category prize went to Donal Hosey (6) and Seamus Aldridge with 22 points. Thank you to Peter Waters Videography for their continued and generous support.
The Junior Cup team narrowly missed out on a crucial top four finish in regional qualifying at Coollattin on Saturday. The New Ross team, managed by Andrew Ryan, finished four adrift of the fourth-placed teams in very difficult conditions.
The team was made up of Mark O'Mahony, Donal Hosey, Michael Kelleher, Joey Furness and Paul McGrath. New Ross face neighbours Enniscorthy in the last 16 of the Barton Cup next weekend. Best of luck to all involved.
