Gymnasts give fine displays

THE COMMUNITY Games county gymnastics finals were run off very succesfully in the Acro Sports Club in Enniscorthy recently. Thanks to Joanne Mahoney and her workmates for the smooth and efficient running of the events and to the judges, Michael and Sarah Kenny, who travelled from Arklow.

The following Areas were represented: New Ross, Castlebridge-Crossabeg, Gorey, Clonard, GlynnBarntown, Clonroche-Poulpeasty, Enniscorthy, Bree-Davidstown, Rowe Street-Bride Street, Ballycanew, Adamstown, Oulart, Kilrush-Askamore, Taghmon, Ferns, Clongeen, Bannow-Ballymitty.

The biggest entries were in the Under-12 (30 competitors) girls' section and in the Under-8 girls' section where there were 30 competing. The entries in the boys' sections were considerably down. Nevertheless, the standards were high and medals were well earned. Congratulations to one and all who competed.

The team gymnastics competition is suffering in the past couple of years as Areas find it difficult to get boys to compete. Alas, there was just one entry this year and the team of Caitlyn and Jamie Doyle, Niamh Doran and Ciara Byrne from the Gorey Area will compete for Wexford at the national finals.

First round matches in the outdoor team events between Kilkenny and Carlow are now in progress and Wexford teams will travel away to play the winners, with all matches to be played by June 24. The semi-finals and finals will be played in Carlow on Saturday, July 9.

If you have any problems in regard to playing your matches, please call county co-ordinator Jason Moran. Do make sure that you bring a signature sheet with you and that your team members fill in same before the match is played. The winning team manager is to post on this sheet to Mona O'Reilly, 10, Marian Place, Tullamore, Co. Offaly, after the match.

Please ensure that you put the details of the match, i.e. Under-11 hurling, the names of the teams who played and the winning score, and make sure that the managers sign the sheet as well. Best of luck to all teams.

Craanford G.A.A. grounds were looking resplendent on Saturday last for the county finals of the athletic events. The sun shone brightly and the rain, which threatened at one stage in the early afternoon, never came much to the relief of the organising committee.

The events were a resounding success, and great credit must go the local Games committee who took on this busy programme. The Area was only established a couple of years ago and they have already made great strides and have had much success at county level.

We thank them for their hard work, before, during and after the events on Saturday last, which made for a very enjoyable day for everyone.

A full report on how the competitors fared will commence in next week's edition.
