A number of Wexford athletes competed in the Leevale Open Sports in Cork Institute of Technolgy recently in the presence of the great Sonia O'Sullivan.
Four medals came back to Wexford clubs, all in field events, on a blustery day down south. The first medal went to Marco Pons of D.M.P. in the discus. Following up from his gold in the previous weekend's inter-varsities, Marco took another gold with a throw of 48.28m from the cage.
Also in the discus, fellow DCU student, Emma Owens from St. Paul's, won the bronze with a throw of 35.48m.
Another medal-winner at the inter-varsities, Tony Stafford of Menapians, leaped 6.60m in the long jump to place third. In the high jump, Ryan Carthy-Walsh of Adamstown had his first experience at Senior level competition and showed composure for one so young, taking the gold with a jump of 1.95m.
On day two of the event, Maeve Hayes from St. Paul's was third in the girls' Under-14 high jump with 1.40m in the Juvenile competition.
A number of Wexford athletes also competed in the sprint events.
