Loreto ladies savour All-Ireland success
THE FOUR provinces of Ireland were represented during the week in the All-Ireland Schools finals at the impressive Gormanston College 16court badminton gymnasium.
Badminton Ireland had a very wellorganised day scheduled for all the students taking part, with 44 teams and 176 players plying their skills on the courts in pursuit of an All-Ireland schools title.
Proceedings got under way with team registration at 9.30 a.m., followed by the annual parade, where all schools paraded with their school banner before Leinster Branch President, Breda Connolly.
Wexford had three schools represented in the finals, with Loreto (Wexford) going on to take the title in the girls' Under-19 Division 1 section.
They overcame Sullivan Upper, Sacred Heart School, Westport, St. Anne's Killaloe and St. Vincent's, Dublin, before their final match against the very talented Friends School from Lisburn.
The Loreto School team, captained by Aoife Dunne and also featuring cousins, Eimear and Ciara Dunne, and number one Clodagh Kent, had too much firepower and, although the scores were tight in individual matches, Loreto secured the title with a 6-0 victory.
Also participating in the finals were Good Counsel College (New Ross) in the Division 1 Under-19 boys and St. Peter's College (Wexford) in the Division 2 Under-16 boys.
