'Metric' fastest

Wednesday March 03 2010

WE FINALLY got a week of racing last week, with both nights going ahead even though Monday's card was postponed to Tuesday night.

There was a cracking card on Thursday, and the Larry Byrne-owned 'Metric Daisy' in race three went fastest of the night when she got out well from her trap three draw to score by seven lengths in her career best of 29.18.

The eighth race was an open 525, and 'Kingsmill Honcho' and 'Compass Bernie' were the two to top the market.

It proved so in the race also as 'Compass' led with 'Kingsmill' in pursuit as they turned into the back. However, turning for home, 'Kingsmill' and 'Kerrydale Bhoy' were challenging strongly, with 'Kingsmill' proving too good, going on to score well in the end from 'Compass' in 29.28.

Race two went to the Ronald Shinkwin Jnr.-owned 'Piercestown West' who was impressive when coming away from her field to score by five lengths in 29.34. Race six saw the Piercestown kennel complete a nice double when 'Piercestown Pet' came in as reserve to score by a length when getting the better of leader 'Panda Man' in 29.31.

'Hospital Pass' led in the ninth race, a 575 open, and it was as good as over as he went on to score a snug fourlength win from 'Compass Hodge' in 32.14. 'Hospital' was winning for the 22nd time from 65 runs, a fine money-spinner for J. O'Neill and Michael Doyle.

Willie Robinson doesn't have too many runners at Enniscorthy, but he came away with a nice win in the last race when his 'Willies Brindle' led trap to line to hold 'Bandicoot Mia' by a length in 33.66 over 600 yards.

The Wadsworths from Cork take their share of prize money from the track and scored a double from their usual six runners or so.

In race one, they withdrew 'Compass Big Mick', only to replace him with 'Compass Sam' who duly went on to score by three and a half lengths in 29.64.

In the seventh, 'Earth Trigger' held 'Tyford Comet' by a length in 32.11 (575). Race four saw the Seánie Fenlon and Dean Harpur-owned 'Business Doc' score an easy five and a half length win in 29.49, leading all the way from his trap one draw.

Trainer Harry Seery also got on the scoresheet when 'Ballyverry Lee' had three and a half lengths to spare over 'Tweedle Dee' in 29.41.
