ST. HELEN'S

We were all set to finally get back on the fairways last weekend but, unfortunately, more rain on Thursday and Friday put paid to that.

The winter league rounds four and five are re-scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, January 30 and 31. The forecast is promising, so fingers crossed we'll be threading the fairways once again.

The A.G.M. of St. Helen's Bay Golf Club will take place in the clubhouse after the golf on Saturday, January 30, at 4 p.m.

ROSSLARE

There was widespread regret throughout the club this week at the death of one its longest-serving members, Edmund Wheeler. Edmund served as Captain in 1967 and as President in 1994, but most members will remember him as Chairman of the greens committee.

For almost 20 years he served in this position and put in endless hours for the betterment of the links which was dear to his heart. On the playing side he was a tenacious competitor and was part of many winning club teams.

For the past number of years he served as a club trustee. To his wife Catherine, son and daughters, sincere sympathy is extended. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Saturday fourball, twelve holes: 1, Syl Farrell (13) and Stephen Rossiter (14), 31 points; 2, Paddy Lonergan (11) and Jimmy Dempsey (14), 31 points.

WEXFORD

Despite the continued wet weather and soft underfoot conditions, we got back to almost near normality last week with three competitions being played.

Wednesday's 13-hole fourball competition was won by club Captain Paddy Cleary and Brian 'Sam' Dempsey with a score of 32 points.

Saturday's nine-hole fourball was won by Andrew Roche and Pat Geoghegan with a score of 25 points (back five).

Gráinne Whelan has been appointed club administrator and took up her position last week at Wexford Golf Club. We welcome Gráinne and send her every best wish for the future.

Best wishes also to Vice-Captain Tony O'Neill who is currently on the injured list and will be out of golfing action for the next few months, and good wishes also to Denis Brennen, Brian McKenna and Seán Nolan who are also on the injured list.

The last Joker draw was won by Pat Geoghegan who won €50. Next week's jackpot will be €1,594.

NEW ROSS

Tough conditions prevailed for last weekend's 14-hole singles at New Ross, but nonetheless there was a very good field eager after the weather conditions over the last month for every opportunity to take part in competitive golf.

Peter Ryan (12) was the man to come out on top, carding a very good 31 points given the tough conditions. M.J. Cullen (17) came home in second place on 30 points, with Paul Harrington (8) a further point back in third.

Andrew Ryan won the gross prize with 25 points, whilst the categories were won by Tommy Liston (7, 25 points), Cyril Stafford (13, 27 points) and Leo Booth (18, 29 points).

The third and fourth rounds of the winter league will take place over the next two weekends (January 31 and February 7). Due to the cancellation of the Christmas classic, a Valentine's classic will take place from Saturday, February 13, to Saturday, February 20. It is an open four-person team event, and men, ladies and visitors can play in any combination.

Now is a great time for anyone considering taking up golf or joining a club, with some brilliant value membership offers available in New Ross. New entrants can join with full playing rights for €320 plus levies (€456 in total including €75 to spend in the bar/restaurant).

The under 30s pay €365 inclusive of levies for full playing rights, whilst Juniors' and students' subscription is just €100 and €150 respectively. Any full member can also introduce a spouse or partner for just €200. For further information please contact the club on 051-421433 or by e-mail at info@newrossgolfclub.ie

The draws for the national inter-club competitions have been made and the first of the matches will not be long in coming around. In late March, the Barton Cup team face a tough task in the first round against Waterford, with the winners going on to meet Wexford in the next round.

In their first round matches in April, the All-Ireland fourball team will face Wexford, the Irish mixed play Borris, and the Provincial Towns will renew acquaintances with Waterford.

A list of team managers will be up on the noticeboard this week and if you are interested in taking part on any of the teams, please get in touch with the relevant team manager(s).

BALLYMONEY

The bad weather in midweek put paid to the resumption of the winter league. The course was closed on Saturday and the back nine was open on Sunday but no competition was played.

Last weekend the back nine nine-hole competition was won by Stephen Kennedy from Andrew Byrne and Robbie Kehoe, all on 20 points.

Charlie Logan held off Martin Conroy and Seán Furlong for fourth prize, all on 19 points. Hopefully next weekend will see better weather.
